Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 redesigns viewed notifications, now transparent

The first beta release of Android 16 QPR1 rolled out a redesigned lock screen with a “seen notifications” section. That newly introduced UI element has now been made a little bit better in Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2.

With the redesigned notifications menu introduced one Android 16 beta ago, Google added a section called “show seen notifications.” This was one differentiating feature that makes notifications on the lock screen much less intrusive, relegating them to a small pill under new notifications.

The Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 update made a small adjustment to that pill on Pixel devices. Instead of an opaque UI element, the pill is now transparent. Along with that, Google has changed the setting responsible to “viewed notifications” in the settings. This transparent pill also contains silent notifications.

This setting can be turned on in Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 by heading to Settings > Notifications > Notifications on lock screen. Nothing else about that menu has seemed to change in this update.

The design makes the lock screen look a little cleaner. Viewed notifications have already been seen, so they aren’t as important and can be set to the side until needed. Making them transparent allows them to blend into the wallpaper for a more seamless UI.

The small redesign to notifications also comes as part of tweaks Google made to Android 16 in the current beta. Larger Material 3 Expressive changes won’t be seen until later on as more features become available in the public version.
